Painting POTA masks

Yesterday I got the two Planet of the Apes masks painted. I went back and looked at the early photos of the makeup in that wonderful movie and matched them to my memory of being on set for the TV show. It was my first job when I came to Hollywood.

I remember being in the long makeup trailer on the Fox backlot and the appliances laid out in the morning and the pots of Castor Oil grease makeup we used on the foam rubber appliances. There was the orange brown base and dark brown shading color. I matched this memory with a new batch of paint and painted both. Those were amazing times. I remember clearly John Chambers coming into the trailer early in the morning and later Roddy Macdowall. Roddy was the life of that morning and later I would work with him again and again. He was a truly nice human being.

Today I’ll lay the hair on with Barag cement and crepe hair. The teeth are cast in latex and get placed today too. Both these masks will be done and once more I have caught up with my orders. For now.

Oh…and I did get in my 30 minutes of time on my latest free flight airplane build. Slowly but surely the Cessna is framing up.

I have new sculptures to start and other things to do for the store. Not to mention direct two more films this year.

  1. Hi Steve, I ordered your Cornelius mask last year in October, looks awesome! Love the mask! I also customized it a bit, since I’m not wearing it I glued it down to a mannequin head painted the eyes it came out great! I can send you pictures if you like? Please do a Gorilla mask I would definitely buy it from you! Or even a General Ursus mask or head. That’s actually my favorite character from the series! Great stuff by the way would like to buy some more collectibles from your website.

    I also have one of your original Blue Alien mask from 2011 I think?
